Apple has announced a pivotal change in its app distribution policy. Beginning Monday, September 16, users in the European Union will be able to purchase iPad applications through third-party app stores. This update coincides with the release of iPadOS 18, an operating system upgrade that brings new features and capabilities.Upon installing iPadOS 18, EU users will gain the capability to access alternative app stores, broadening their choices beyond the traditional Apple App Store. This development grants developers more freedom, as they will now be allowed to create web browsers with their own rendering engines, bypassing the previously mandatory use of Apple’s WebKit.Several third-party app stores have already been introduced for iPhone users in the EU, such as Setapp Mobile, AltStore PAL, and the newly launched Epic Games Store. These platforms are expected to expand their support to iPads later this year, offering users a more diverse selection of applications and services. This change follows the classification of the iPad operating system as a “core platform service” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) in April. The DMA requires major tech companies, including Apple, to allow third-party app stores on their devices. Earlier this year, the EU also mandated the inclusion of third-party app stores on iPhones.Initially, Apple argued that iPadOS did not meet the user threshold required for compliance with the DMA’s regulations. However, EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager later clarified that the iPad operating system serves as an “important gateway” for many companies aiming to connect with their customers. The material has been provided by InstaForex Company – www.instaforex.com
