Samsung SDI of South Korea has announced a partnership with General Motors (GM) to form a joint venture aimed at supplying electric vehicle (EV) batteries within the United States. The collaboration involves an investment of approximately $3.5 billion to construct a new battery cell manufacturing plant. Initially, this facility will have an annual production capacity of 27 gigawatt-hours (GWh), with plans to commence mass production by 2027. Future expansion projects are set to boost the annual capacity to 36 GWh, according to a statement from Samsung SDI.The new joint venture will be located on a 680-acre site in New Carlisle, Indiana. The facility is expected to generate over 1,600 jobs, thereby supporting the local economy.Samsung SDI highlighted that the plant will produce high-performance, nickel-rich prismatic batteries based on NCA (Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum oxide) technology. These advanced batteries are slated for use in forthcoming GM electric vehicles, offering enhanced driving range due to high energy density and increased safety features, such as a metallic exterior and an integrated venting system. The material has been provided by InstaForex Company – www.instaforex.com
