Manufacturing sales increased 0.7% month-over-month in August 2023, below the preliminary estimate of a 1% gain and less than a 1.6% rise in the previous month. This growth was primarily triggered by larger sales of petroleum and coal (+10.5%), as concerns over oil production cuts by OPEC+ and its partners manifested in high cost of petroleum products. Additionally, sales advanced for food (+1.5%) and machinery (+2.4%). On the other hand, sales of fabricated metals (-3.5%) and miscellaneous (-9.4%) declined. Manufacturing sales rose in seven provinces, led by Alberta (+6.0%) and Manitoba (+10.0%). Meanwhile, they dropped the most in Quebec (-1.8%). Manufacturing Sales in Canada averaged 0.34 percent from 1981 until 2023, reaching an all time high of 21.40 percent in June of 2020 and a record low of -27.40 percent in April of 2020.
