Louisville, KY, Feb. 13, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Appriss Health, provider of the most comprehensive platform for substance use disorder (SUD) in the U.S., today announced it has integrated Indiana’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (INSPECT) data into Community Healthcare System’s (CHS) Epic electronic health records (EHR). Community Healthcare System consists of three not-for-profit hospitals in Northwest Indiana: Community Hospital, Munster; St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago; and St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart. INSPECT, provided through PMP Gateway, enables CHS’ medical staff instant access to prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) data in support of clinical decision making within workflow to improve patient safety and outcomes.
In August 2017, Indiana announced a state-sponsored initiative and made available a statewide, comprehensive platform for healthcare professionals to review patients’ controlled substance prescription history more quickly and efficiently. This platform, PMP Gateway, supports INSPECT and transfers data directly into EHRs and pharmacy management systems. Statewide integration of the INSPECT platform is a key component of Indiana’s ongoing efforts to attack the opioid crisis. Upon state approval, INSPECT users can access multi-state PDMP data, including data from all border states, in a single query through one integration process.
For CHS’ care teams, PMP Gateway enables efficient access to a patient’s prescription information within the Epic EHR workflow. Previously, physicians needed to log in to a separate website to retrieve a patient’s controlled substance dispensations from INSPECT, then cross-reference that data with the patient’s health information in disparate systems. PMP Gateway has been proven to demonstrate significant time savings to providers, thus making them more efficient in their daily activities. It also provides critical information directly within workflow to help providers effectively improve patient care.
“At the hospitals of Community Healthcare System, I oversee clinical quality programs including improving physician engagement, clinical integration, process improvement of quality initiatives, clinical care coordination and effectiveness of care programs along the care continuum,” said Alan Kumar, M.D., Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer. “When I learned about this state-sponsored initiative, I believed that integration of INSPECT into Epic is exactly what we should do to empower our physicians and prescribers to identify patients who may be at risk for prescription drug addiction, overdose, and death. PMP Gateway equips our clinicians and care teams with the information and insights they need, almost instantly, to help those patients.”
“We believe that PMP Gateway can and will increase the utilization of INSPECT information at the point-of-care for patients. Now, PDMP data is available for every patient encounter with one click through our state-sponsored integration initiative,” said Deborah J. Frye, Executive Director of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA). “We applaud CHS for working with INSPECT as an early adopter to integrate our data into their workflow, and we highly encourage other hospitals and health systems in Indiana to contact us and do the same—now. This initiative, simply said, can help save lives today.”
“We commend Community Healthcare System for their commitment to trying to prevent prescription drug addiction in their patient population by integrating INSPECT into Epic via PMP Gateway,” said Rob Cohen, President, Appriss Health. “We are proud to partner with the State of Indiana, IPLA, and INSPECT to deliver the clinical integration of PDMP data and clinical decision support solutions for SUD within EHRs and pharmacy management systems statewide. Indiana is at the forefront of the fight against the opioid epidemic, and I believe its citizens are safer because of this important, state-sponsored initiative to integrate PDMP data into clinical workflow.”

PMP Gateway is a managed service platform that provides comprehensive connectivity and access to data, clinical decision support, patient support, patient engagement, and care coordination that interoperates seamlessly and securely with leading EHR and pharmacy management systems, PMP InterConnect, and 46 PDMPs across the U.S.
PDMP data, analytics, and more are now integrated into physician and pharmacist workflows through EHR and pharmacy management systems in 32 states, and 24 million transactions are now completed per month nationwide via PMP Gateway.
Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia have all deployed PMP Gateway enterprise licenses for all of the prescribers and dispensers in their states.
